Message From Your ICG President

Steve Newton

Fellow Members,

I want to personally thank Membership Committee chairman, George Sigeti, for conducting our annual Board of Directors election process, and I want to welcome Eddie Smith and Gerald Friz to the 2013 Board along with Ken Collins, who was elected to a second, 3-year term.
At the same time, I feel the need to share my disappointment that only 3 members stepped forward as candidates in this year’s election.  I’ve heard through the grapevine that some folks think that 3 years is too much time to give up, and that we should change our By-Laws to have Directors serve 2-year terms instead of 3 year terms.

Let me assure you that it takes a new Board member the better part of their first year to get comfortable with our structure, policies, etc., and it would be challenging to say the least if we expected incoming Board members to immediately assume positions of responsibility. The ICG was established as member-owned, member-driven from the outset, and the simple fact that we have no physical home or full-time paid staff to administrate/manage the organization serves two purposes.  First, it allows us to keep our membership fees low, and second, it allows us to literally control our own destiny.  However, it also requires some degree of involvement from the members in order to accomplish that.  That involvement includes serving on our member-based committees as well as the Board of Directors in order to minimize the amount of cash we need to spend on outside contractors.

In addition, the ICG is the only organization of its type where sponsors are also members, and as such, they have the same rights and privileges as do our active members.  Once again, I encourage all of you (members and sponsor-members) to consider getting involved with one of our working committees to help the ICG become a recognized entity in the golf industry.

Thank you.

Steve Newton, ICG President

UST Introduces Recoil Technology for Irons

This year at the PGA show UST Mamiya, an ICG Sponsor, introduced its latest breakthrough in graphite shaft technology, the recoil iron shaft. Here is an explanation of what the new technology is all about according to Jamie Pipes at UST Mamiya.

This iron shaft technology helps the butt section of the graphite iron shaft to transfer energy better. We used different materials and layup designs that allow the butt section of a graphite iron shaft to load and unload better than steel. Carbon fibers transfer energy better than steel already. But in the past with heavier weight iron shafts (95 grams to 125 grams), the walls of a graphite iron are built up thicker and would prevent the butt section from bending  or flexing at all. Resulting in a dead feel and the only part of the shaft that would flex at all was the tip end - producing flyers and higher launching flight.

The result that we have seen with this new Recoil shaft is more distance (lighter weighted graphite), tighter dispersion (from being able to control trajectory) and buttery feel of graphite.  See why UST Mamiya is the #1 selling custom upgrade shafts in America five years and counting at www.ustmamiya.com

Wishon Golf Wins its 4th Golf Digest Hot List Distinction

Golf Digest has selected the TWGT 929HS fairway woods as a winner in the magazine’s 2013 Hot List competition.

This marks the 4th time that a Wishon Golf design has been chosen for Golf Digest’s Hot List, more than any other component clubmaker.

<picture 2.png>

Past Wishon Golf winning models on the Golf Digest Hot List have included the 515GRT fairway woods in 2005, the 770CFE irons in 2006 and the 949MC fairway woods in 2007.  This was the first year Wishon Golf had submitted club models for Hot List evaluation since 2009.

Evaluation for Hot List is made on the basis of Performance, Innovation, Look/Sound/Feel and Demand for the product.  Once the Golf Digest staff determine which club models they want to evaluate, they obtain models for testing by a panel of 20 different golfers from plus to 16 handicap. These golfers hit and evaluate each club for Performance, Innovation, Look/sound/feel and Demand.

Because Wishon Golf designs are never sold in any of the thousands of traditional retail outlets, their models always begin the Hot List evaluation with the lowest possible rating for Demand.  For a Wishon Golf model to overcome that part of the evaluation to win a position on the actual Hot List means that its performance, innovation and looks/sound/feel have to rate very high with the testing panel.

As an ICG member clubmaker, you can use the Golf Digest Hot List to your advantage to show that custom clubs are recognized by the Golf Digest staff as award winning designs. This can help educate your customers on the benefits of using custom designs like Wishon Golf. Find out more at www.wishongolf.com.
